8hr Junior race success at Hollingworth – June 2014

Sailfish Team Successes for young sailorsBurwain Junior and Youth club members attended the RYA OnBoard 8 hr race at Hollingworth Sailing Club on Saturday June 14th, finishing a creditable 2nd place in both the OnBoard and Advanced races.

The day was a great experience for the 13 Burwain junior members who were able to put some of their new skills to the test. There were 40 participants in total from Norhtwest Clubs competing in eight teams in 2 handed Laser 2000. RS Feva & Pico classes. The aim of the day was to complete as many laps of the course as possible in 8 hours.

Starting at 10am in near zero wind proved challenging for even the most experienced sailors, but shorty after the start, winds picked up to near perfect conditions for this type of race event which is aimed at bringing newer sailors into the sport.

Mixing new and experienced sailors helped to ensure that everyone got a good chance to practice new skills and kept Burwain’s teams in close touch of the lead.

Well done to everyone who took part, with particular mention to Kady Jo Wood, for keeping her cool right to the end and Archie Whowell, who picked up the “Outsanding Sailor” prize for an OnBoard sailing in the advanced team, sailing over 3 of the 8 hours for his team.
