Ian Dobson -The National and World GP14 Champion

Congratulations must go to possibly one of Burwain’s best ever Sailors ‘Ian Dobson’ as he claims the National GP14 Championship which he secured on August 16th at Largs on the west coast of Scotland on the Firth of Clyde.

The Nationals were Held over 5 days with 9 races in total with 7 to count. Burwain club member Ian Dobson with his crew Andy Tunnicliffe of Windermere sailing Club took 1st place overall, plus Burwain’s Commodore Stephen Graham and Crew Lee Tenant came an admirable 6th place out of the 47 competing teams.

Success at this competitive level of sailing is no stranger to Ian Dobson who now holds both the GP14 World Championship title which he won last year at Looe in Cornwall and now the UK National Championship – A brilliant achievement in what is a very competitive class.

The dinghy racing at Largs tested the skills of the competitors with both light and strong winds conditions. Of the 9 races, competitors counted their best 7 results. Ian Dobson took the title with a nett score of 9, which included 5 x 1st places and 2 x 2nd places.

Stephen Graham and Lee Tennant’s best result was a 3rd  place in race 2. Their 6th place overall was achieved with a nett score of 46.

Stephen Graham as Club Commodore comments, “This is a tremendous achievement by Burwain Sailing Club to have both the World and National titles held by one of its very own club members.  Sailing may be a minority sport but at this top level it is highly competitive with many elite sailors competing. This success illustrates the depth of talent we have at our club.”
