The club holds regular race training courses and sessions for new and existing members wanting to improve their sailing technique and speed on the water.
Race Training Sessions
If you are looking to improve your racing or want to learn how to race then you have the following options:
Informal Tuition:
Why not attend one of our Saturday morning family sessions where you will be able to practice essential race training techniques under the watchful eye of a tutor or experienced member.
Formal Courses: Throughout the year the club will aim to hold specialised Race Training courses for specific boat classes – Talk to the Training Officer Peter Dewhurst for more details.

- The starting sequence 5,4,1,Go
- The start line – understanding line bias
- Wind shifts and wind patterns
- Good starting technique
- Other boats
- Maximising speed
- Approaching and rounding marks

- When to tack and gybe
- Maximising boat speed using the boat controls

What will I learn? | What makes a successful racing sailor How to make a boat go fast and boat handling skills The basic racing rules and how they are used in racing tactics Using the variations in the wind in racing Goal - To work on practical sailing skills, practice race training exercises and also to introduce the higher level skills that can be developed through self coaching |
